Meeniyan is a small township with a tree-lined median strip and variety of boutique stores and cafes. The town slogan “the turning point” provides reference to the fact that at Meeniyan you can choose to travel along the highway to Foster or turn off to explore Fish Creek and Wilsons Promontory. Meeniyan has justifiably earnt its reputation as the music capital of South Gippsland attracting a vast and eclectic array of Australian and international music acts. Meeniyan was the filming location for the popular ABC1 mini series, ‘Bed of Roses’.

History of Meeniyan
Originally, Meeniyan was a station on the South Gippsland railway line. The station was opened during the 1890s and operated until 1991 when the line to Barry Beach servicing the oil fields in Bass Strait was closed. Following the closure, the line was dismantled and turned into the Great Southern Rail Trail. Today, the station grounds retain a pivot sheet, goods platform, mile marker 88 and buffer stop. The Post Office opened on 16 August 1890 shortly before the railway arrived.
