The Great Southern Star in Leongatha was established in 1890 and is locally owned by the Giles family. The Star is an award-winning newspaper offering a wide selection of local news, sports and community events along with classified advertising, quality display advertising, real estate and regular features.

With a weekly paid circulation of 5,200, and a readership of 18,600 the Star is the biggest selling newspaper in the South Gippsland Shire reaching people in towns from Yarram to Foster, all along the South Gippsland Highway to Leongatha, Korumburra, Inverloch, Wonthaggi, Phillip Island and out to Mirboo North and most towns in between.
