Dairy Expo 2018
SOUTH GIPPSLAND DAIRY EXPO
SEE THE LATEST IN DAIRY INNOVATION AND ENJOY A GREAT DAY OUT
The Strzelecki Lions Club is proud to host the 2018 South Gippsland Dairy Expo in Korumburra on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 September.
South Gippsland is home to many exceptional dairy farm enterprises that form a significant part of the rural community. The Expo provides an opportunity for the community to see the latest in dairy innovation and technology - in an easy ‘one stop shop’ - while offering a host of entertainment for the whole family.
The Lions Club is delighted to have Fonterra, long term supporters of the Expo, as this year’s Major Sponsor. Fonterra Farm Source will host a stand on both days of the Expo, where community members can meet the team.
This year's Expo looks to be bigger and better, than ever:

The popular industry breakfast is on again, co-hosted by Fonterra and Reid Stockfeeds. The breakfast will take place at 8.30am, Thursday 27 September – but get in quick, bookings are essential (see below).

The Sanders Kids Farm Animal Pavilion, will offer plenty of interactive fun with animal pens, cow-mould painting, a dairy dress-up corner and more. This pavilion is hosted by the Rotary Club of Korumburra and sponsored by Poowong Dairy & Hardware and Westfalia Warragul.

Back by popular demand, Matt Harms, from OnFarm Consulting, is hosting "Love makes the world go round, what makes dairy go round… PEACE - LOVE - RYEGRASS" on Wednesday 26 September at 11.00am, sponsored by the South Gippsland Shire Council and Rabobank.

Panel members - Mark Wilms and Andrew Balfour (Wilfour Farms) and sharefarmer Michael O’Brien (Nambrok), Paul and Lisa Mumford and employee Aaron Thomas (Won Wron), Gordon and Sylvia Vagg and farm manager Paul Cocksedge (Leongatha South), and Matt Long (Rabobank) - will discuss what makes for a harmonious working relationship in the dairy industry. Learn how employee/employer, sharefarming and farm manager arrangements can be harmonious for both parties - is it easy, or does it take hard work?

The Udder Truth Showbag sponsored by South East Organic Fertiliser is back! is back! Purchase a $2 showbag at the gate, visit 10 of the listed exhibitors, answer an easy question, enter the draw, and you could be $3,000 richer by the end of the Expo!

Participating companies include: Fonterra, Federation Training, De Wit Trading/The Wrangler New Zealand, Browns Stockfeed Pty Ltd, Coopers Animal Health, Lely Center Gippsland, Easy Dairy Automation Systems, Gendore Tractors & Machinery Pty Ltd, GippsDairy/Dairy Australia, MaxCare, ProviCo, Rabobank, Reid Stockfeeds, Rural Bank, and Victorian Hoofcare Services.

For some fun competitive banter, "The Big Gippsland Jersey – Dunk-Off" is a must-see. A daily competition featuring star guests to dunk… in milk of course! The rules are simple: one dollar, one throw, and aim well.

In an Expo first, Cows Create Careers students from Gippsland schools will go head-to-head in a "Race About Dairy" - a game of speed, accuracy and knowledge. Students will complete activities and questions about the Australian dairy industry. First school over the line, wins. An initiative of Federation Training and Dairy Australia.

Hungry? Volunteers from Poowong Kindergarten will be serving tasty treats on both days of the Expo.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Strzelecki Lions Club. To date, the Club has raised raised $540,000, which has been distributed throughout the community. The Club’s activities and the Dairy Expo, could not happen without valuable support from the community, companies, and volunteers.

The Expo is supported by Gold Sponsors GippsDairy, Dairy Australia, Reid Stockfeeds, Rabobank, Federation Training, Burra Foods, South Gippsland Shire Council, and Dairy News Australia.

MUSIC
‘The Gob-Iron String Band’ come out of Melbourne’s back-yard and beer-garden Old Timey scene. Forged on a shared obsession for early appalachian and cajun fiddle tunes, the incorporation of the harmonica (or Gob-Iron) gives this band a ‘honk’ that make folks want to dance. The Gob-Iron String Band are Nara DeMason, Charlie Sandford, Peter Graham, Moira Hanrahan and Tobias Hengeveld.

'Cat & Clint' are an Old Time Duo featuring sweet vocal harmonies, 5-string banjo, fiddle, banjo ukulele and mountain dulcimer. They are inspired and driven by Traditional Appalachian Mountain Music and the passing down of fiddle tunes and ballads through generations of players from Australia and the USA. Whether it’s a murder ballad, a song of longing and heartbreak, a crooked fiddle tune or a rollicking banjo song, Cat and Clint endeavor to present this music with the authenticity and respect that it demands. The duo mix up their repertoire with Clints original songs and a good dose of vintage country blues.

Dogs hold a very special place in the hearts of millions of Australians and so Pinot & Pooches is a great event for dog lovers to come together.

Competitions:
$500 Writers Prize

The Coal Creek Literary Festival will be running a number of writing competitions this year as part of the festival. The main competition will again be the Bert van Bedaf Memorial Award for the best short story. Bert was an integral part of getting the Coal Creek Literary Festival off the ground ten years ago. After Bert passed away in 2010, the open short story competition was renamed to honour his memory. The prize money was increased to $500 and has since drawn a very high standard of entries.

Past winning entries have been posted on the Coal Creek Literary Festival website.
https://coalcreekcommunityparkandmuseum.com/literary-festival/.
The competition is open to anyone with an imagination, a pen and paper or word processing program. You can enter as many times as you like, each entry must pay an entry fee.
Competition entry Fee is $15

The festival will also be running an Open Poetry competition which offers a $200 prize
Competition entry fee for this is $10

Now entering its seventh year, the Bert van Bedaf award has proved to be a very popular part of the Coal Creek Literary Festival with entries coming from all over Australia. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Coal Creek Literary Festival website or can be picked up from Coal Creek Community Park & Museum in Korumburra. Conditions and entry fees are all on the entry form.

So if you have a story crawling around in your head, something Grandpa did as a kid or a weird dream crying out for a meaning, get it down on paper and send it in. It could be worth $500.

Entries close Friday 28 September 2018
Sunday, 14 October 2018. From 10.30am to 5.00pm. Prize winners will be announced at 12.30pm at the Festival.

MUSIC
Presented by Sandy Point Music Club.

"It could have been any other Wednesday, in any other bar in New York city, but unbeknownst to Alice Beatty and Cameron Potts, a chance encounter in a downtown Manhattan venue would lead to the formation of Winnie Blues.

The Winnie Blues draw on inspiration from some of the most influential duo's in music history. From Johnny and June to Nick and Kylie, and Emmylou and Graham to place their unique stamp on the American music scene.
The formula is simple yet powerful. Two voices, one microphone, one guitar.
When The Winnie Blues step on to the stage they bring with them a mix of established artistry and raw sincerity".

This event brings local businesses together as well as involving local community groups and service clubs assisting in their fundraising efforts. Sounds of Summer was born to bring an overall experience of our beautiful coastline for all to enjoy!

From $25 - $53

Inverloch Sounds of Summer will support Dementia Australia as the festival’s charity for 2018 pledging a gold coin donation from every ticket sold.

Dementia describes a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. It is not one specific disease. Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. Brain function is affected enough to interfere with the person’s normal social or working life.

This charity has been chosen in memory of the late Billy Walsh, a loving wife, mother and grandmother who dedicated her whole life to her family.

ART & CRAFT
September 2018:

Gallery 1 – Sue Gilford
"Since moving to South Gippsland, I have been involved in many community arts and indigenous projects, Artist in Schools program’s and murals for the South Gippsland Shire. I have had numerous solo and group shows in South Gippsland and in Melbourne.
Currently I have an intense interest in pyrography and working my “burning” techniques onto timbers, furniture gourds and boab nuts. I was really honoured to do my wood burning on the new information desk at Wilsons Promontory".

Gallery 2 – Zetta Kanta
Award-winning fiber artist Zetta Kanta is Melbourne based; she works with wool and silk to create impressionist style modern wall-hangings and tapestries that resemble more a painting than a non woven fabric.
Her wall-hangings are very tactile and highlight our need to return to nature and feel its pulse. Raw fibers, textures, and natural materials have always fascinated Zetta.

Gallery 3 – ‘Colour and Movement’, Sandra Peeters:
"Drawing and painting have formed a strong part of my life for as long as I can remember, along with a general interest in the visual arts. I am mostly interested in representing and interpreting the movement, events and environment through the use of abstracted line and colour".
Gallery Hours: September to December: Wednesday to Monday: 10:00am to 4:00pm, Tuesday Closed
Closed Christmas Day and Boxing day.

EXHIBITION
Exhibition by Jennifer Marshall.
This is a first in a series of works by artists who link Tasmania and South Gippsland.

For the artist Jennifer Marshall, the sea is a means of communing with the world around her and during the ten years she spent living at Venus Bay her art reflected the beautiful, wild beaches of South Gippsland. In 2010 she moved from Venus Bay to Hobart where she continues to paint the Tasmanian coastline and ocean, but the works in this exhibition, part of a series titled ‘Across the Strait’, pays special homage to the sea sponges of this spectacular Victorian region.
Throughout October. Gallery open Wednesday to Monday: 10:00am to 4:00pm
