Local garden clubs were started by groups of gardening enthusiasts well before W.W. 1. Then LHS was officially formed 1948 and held its first Daffodil Show in 1949. For many years the show has also been the focus of a major Daffodil Festival, starting in 1957, and involving numerous other groups from the town and surrounding areas.

Today the club continues to thrive. Its one hundred or so members hold a monthly meeting, where a show bench of seasonal flowers and plants is always a brilliant feature. Guest speakers and members present and discuss a wide range of topics, ranging from the exotic to basic how- to’s. Meetings end with a shared supper and a chance to chat and visit the library. Other activities include trips to gardens and nurseries, occasional workshops and regular communication with other garden clubs.

By far the biggest activities though, are the organising and presentation of two major flower shows. Daffodils continue as a main feature, with the Leongatha Daffodil and Floral Show held annually in late August or early September. The Leongatha Rose Spectacular, has been an annual event since 1970. It is held in mid November and is considered one of the finest
in Victoria.
